Highlights of the HiPEAC24

Date: 6 February 2024

The HiPEAC 2024 conference took place in Munich, Germany, January 17-19, 2024. HiPEAC stands as the top meeting point for experts in the field of computer architecture, programming models, compilers, and operating systems for general-purpose, embedded, and cyber-physical systems.

Event highlights

HiPEAC was attended by approximately 700 participants. The event offered a diverse program covering topics from Edge to Cloud to HPC, with 74 sessions, 32 workshops, 11 tutorials, and numerous paper sessions, accompanied by an industrial exhibition that ran in parallel with the conference. This event stood out as a hub for enterprises, academic institutions, universities, and a vibrant startup and SME ecosystem, setting a new record for the highest sponsorship amount in the history of HiPEAC conferences.

The two highlight videos are an excellent way for a real sneak peek into the conference. The first video from the HiPEAC coordinator Koen De Bosschere reflects on a successful conference, and the second shows the general impressions featuring Diana Goehringer, the general chair, and Stefan Wallentowitz, the local host.

HiPEAC and EUPILOT

At the event, EUPILOT joined by EPI and EUPEX provided a tutorial “European HPC systems towards Exascale: a view from EPI, EUPILOT, EUPEX”. These three interlinked projects represent an important milestone towards a more autonomous European supply chain for HPC and more generally for digital technologies. As a prelude to the tutorial, the scope of the projects were introduced: Etienne Walter (Eviden) provided an introduction to the EPI Project, Carlos Puchol (BSC) to EUPILOT, and Jean-Robert Bacou (Eviden) to EUPEX.

The tutorial then offered a demo/hands-on experience on the RISC-V platforms hosted at BSC through the RISC-V Software Development Vehicle EUPILOT/EPI session held by Filippo Mantovani and Pablo Vizcaino from BSC. The test accounts were provided to the attendees and participants were invited to bring their scientific codes and test them via remote access on the RISC-V software development vehicle (SDV).

EUPEX launch of the Early Access Programme (EAP)

In the second part of the tutorial, the EUPEX project announced the launch of the EUPEX Early Access Programme (EAP), presented by Bernd Mohr (Jülich Supercomputing Centre). EUPEX offers the EuroHPC CoEs and selected EU projects access to CEA’s Joliot-Curie system with its A64FX partition (which is similar to the Rhea processors to come) to allow the European applications ecosystem to prepare for the technologies of our future pilot system, and particularly SiPearl’s Rhea processor. In addition, EUPEX will also give access to the software tools that are planned to be deployed on the EUPEX Pilot.

EuroHPC representation

Besides the tutorial, the work of EUPILOT was also presented at the “RISC-V: the cornerstone ISA for the next generation of HPC infrastructures” session by EuroHPC representative Alexandra Kourfali who gave an insight into strategic EU-level perspective on RISC-V, and Gianluca Mittone, who presented RISC-V for AI.  If you were registered for the conference, you still have the opportunity to access all the materials.

The event was an undeniable success, marked by enthusiastic participation, engaging discussions, and a vibrant atmosphere. We are thrilled with the positive feedback received and we look forward to the HiPEAC25 next year in Barcelona, Spain.
